You said you've found records which make Elizabeth Anderson questionable as
the wife of Robert Carruth. Now does this make her just questionable or have
you decided to drop her altogether? Anything you'd care to share, I'm interested
in hearing - even if it's just hypothesis.

Got info from John Brinkerhoff that Robert married a second time on 6 Apr 1815 to Mary
Hitchcock. Then Robert died in May 1815.

Hey Lisa,
Robert's marriage to Mary for a very short time is documented in "Carruth
Story" and "From Whence Ye Came." However, in researching what I thought
was our Anderson family history, I discovered that at least so far I am unable to find
where Elizabeth Anderson was married to Robert Carruth (our line) except in the books that
show that marriage. I can not find the supporting documents. I did find supporting
documents from the Wilkes County, Ga., Deed Books A - V V, 1784-1806, that on "20
Nov. 1796, Robert Carruth and Martha, his wife, of Wilkes Co., Ga.," sold there 200
acres located on Dry Fork of Long Creek and signed the document, "Robert Carruth,
Marthey (n) Carruth." Robert probably had received this 200 acres as a result of his
participation in the Revolutionary war as others did in this same area which helped him to
decide to move from N. Carolina to Ga. in the early 1790's away from where the area
the Carruth family had lived for many years since their arrival in Am!
er!
ica in Pa. and subsequent move t
o N. Carolina. After finding this record I began to wonder about the validity of
Elizabeth Carruth being Robert's wife and searched for, but could not find anything
supporting her as being his wife. I soon sent a letter to the family e-mail list asking
if anyone else had anything showing Martha as Robert's wife instead of Elizabeth and
received a very interesting and promising reply. The sender told me that, "the
Heritage of Lawrence County, Alabama" vol. 40, has information concerning the above
and shows Robert marrying Martha Huggins in about 1770. Also, the summary shows that
Martha was the daughter of Robert's first cousin John Huggins, Jr., and Elizabeth
Henderson. Elizabeth Henderson was a sister of Major Lawson Henderson who married
Robert's sister Elizabeth. John (or James) Huggins, Jr., the son of John (or James,
names used interchangeably) Huggens and Mary Carruth (Robert's aunt and sister to
Robert's father Adam). I do not have proof of the above in the way!
o!
f marriage records or some other
sort as I do not have for a marriage of Robert Carruth and Elizabeth Anderson. I do know
that Anderson family historians had a marriage documented to Robert Caruth for Elizabeth
Anderson, but after checking this out further I believe this marriage is for Mary Anderson
and Adam Carruth (Robert's first cousin, son of Alexander, Robert's uncle and
brother to Robert's father Adam). I am not certain on either Martha or Elizabeth
being the wife of Robert and presently still show Elizabeth on my family reports. Yet
another fact to be proven or not :-)
Best Wishes,
Harvey Carrouth

<Hello Christine,
I have some news about one of the descendants of John Anderson found on your page at:
<A

here: Descendants of John Anderson</A>
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~anderson/others/johna.html
I wrote to you last month and told you of finding Elizabeth Anderson there and thinking
she was my fifth great grandmother who married Robert Carruth (listed there as Caruth).
Elizabeth is listed as number 36. I have since figured out that even though the
information for Elizabeth (#36) does not match my fifth great grandmother's, it does
match for another Anderson/Carruth union. I will copy notes from another letter I wrote to
the Carruth E-mail list for this subject below. You will see that the information I have
is for a Mary Anderson instead of Elizabeth Anderson. I hope that maybe there was a
combining of Mary and Elizabeth's information on marrying someone named Caruth or
Carruth and you may have something on Elizabeth Anderson that married Robert Carruth. I
look forward to hearing back from you on what you think of this.
Best wishes,

<< I found one thing knew to report that may interest some of you. Adam
Carruth's son Robert Carruth married Elizabeth Anderson. Robert lived in Rowan Co.,
N.C. on the plantation of his father until he was 16. His father sold the Rowan Co.
plantation in 1762 and moved to Mecklenburg Co., N.C. buying land along Paw Creek of close
to 1000 acres. As an adult, Robert bought and sold land in soon to be Rutherford, Lincoln,
and Polk Counties, N.C. He married Elizabeth Anderson in 1770 and they lived early married
life in Rutherford Co., N.C. before moving to Ga. They are found on the 1790 Census in
Rutherford Co., N.C. They moved to Ga. within a few years
where Robert is found paying taxes as early as 1793 in Wilkes County, Ga.
I have thought that Elizabeth's family could be found documented at the following
address: <
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~anderson/others/johna.html>
There is an Elizabeth Anderson listed as number 36. Her father is listed above her as
number 7. He was Robert Anderson (John2, John1) and died in Abbeville Co., South Carolina.
He married Ann Thompson in November 1765 in Virginia. This Elizabeth would not be
Robert's wife if she were born after 1765. Elizabeth is listed here as:
36 iii. Elizabeth Anderson. She married (1) Robert Maxwell. She married (2) Caruth.
Notes for Robert Maxwell:
!(1) "Gleanings of Virginia History," by William Fletcher Boogher (19 65) p.314.
FHL #975.5 H2bw.
(1) "Of the Revolution."
After checking for other possibilities of who this Elizabeth may have married I found that
she did marry a Carruth and this was her second marriage. This is documented in Mrs. Lela
Grant Carruth's book, "From Whence Ye Came" published in 1982. On page 106
and 107 Adam Carruth-3 (Alexander-1, Robert-2) is shown marrying Mrs. Mary Anderson
Maxwell Carruth before 25 Jan. 1810. There is also a short history about Mary's family
shown here. Mary's first husband Colonel Robert Maxwell was an officer under General
Robert Anderson (Mary's father). Robert Maxwell was the first sheriff of Greenville
Co., S.C. and was killed from ambush 10 Nov. 1797. So this information matches for the
above except the information from the web page was for Elizabeth. Perhaps the Elizabeth
Anderson that married Robert Carruth is on this page as well and I have not found her
there yet. The information for this Anderson family matches pretty closely with the
information for the Carruth family. It is noted !
fo!
r Robert Anderson that Anderson
Co., SC was named for him. I found a couple of web sites with information to back this
statement of the naming of the county at:

Hello,
I've found a web site I wanted to share with you that has Elizabeth Anderson married
to "Caruth" (second marriage). I believe this Elizabeth is Robert's wife.
Robert Carruth (often found as Caruth in Virginia and N. Carolina) was a son of
immigrating ancestor Adam Carruth. Robert and Elizabeth are my 5th great grandparents
(Carruth). Also, I believe Elizabeth's father Robert or her brother Robert, also found
at this web site, is the Robert Anderson that Adam Carruth mentioned in his will. The web
site is found at:

Many thanks go to Mrs. A. Christine Davidson Kraft who provided the information for the
above page. Also, many thank go to Patrick Anderson for adding the above to his web site

One more stone unturned and so many left to find.
