Hello Larry,
You are right that I am interested in the Carruth family history and others I connect
with. I'll give you some information about Abner's family.
From Lela Grant Carruth's book, "From Whence Ye Came," Abner and family are
found on page 90. Listed with Abner are six siblings. They are shown from top to bottom
as: Effie, Helen, Abner, Walter, Rufus, William, and Lessie (there is a note that says
there may be other children). Their father was Walter Everett Carruth.
Walter was born about 1861-1862 while his father was away at war. His mother, Mary Burton
Carruth died and Walter was cared for by Doctor Taylor and his daughter Katherine. When
Walter's father William Alexander Carruth returned, he married Katherine Malinda Jane
Taylor. Walter studied medicine with Doctor Taylor.
Walter is shown as first coming to Waco, Texas, before settling in Corpus Christi, Texas.
He was a doctor there for 50 years. He married Sallie (Sarah) Woodridge who was born in
1860 in Ark. Walter died at 92 years old. Sallie died in Brownsville, Texas, at the home
of her daughter Effie and is buried there.
William Alexander Carruth was born in Alabama in 1833 and died at Prairie Hill, near
Mexia, Texas, in 1912. He had one child (Walter) by his first marriage and 6 children by
his second marriage. William Alexander's father was William Carruth.
William was born about 1806 in Ga., and died after 1850. He married Mary Ann Stovall in
Lawrence County, Alabama, in 1832. William moved his family from Alabama to Noxubee
County, Miss and later to Ark. William's father was Alexander Carruth.
Alexander was born in 1784 in N.C. and died about 1858 in Lawrence County, Alabama. He
had moved to Ga. with his father and family around 1790. He lived in the area of Madison
County, Ga., and married Nancy Elkins. They moved to Lawrence County, Ala., in 1818.
Alexander's father was Robert Carruth who is also my 5th great grandfather. Robert
was the first of our ancestors in this line to be born in America. He was born in 1746 in
the area of Augusta County, Va., and died in 1815 in Madison County, Ga. Robert grew up
in N.C. His father was Adam who moved to N.C. from Pa. where he lived after migrating to
America along with two brothers and two sisters and their families, from Antrim County,
Ireland.
I have written a good bit about Robert and Adam and their families and a good bit of it
can be found on this Carruth forum as well as the Carruth Genforum page. If you are
interested in more information concerning previous ancestors, please see the following
webpage which is another note I wrote concerning this group:

Most of this information was made available due to the work of Lela Grant Carruth and her
book mentioned above as well as Myrtle Carruth Cronkrite and her book, "Carruth
Story," and the many Carruth family historians that sent their family genealogy
information to them to be published in their books. They all deserve a whole lot of
credit for preserving this information for those of us interested in our family history.
The link I referenced above concerns extended ancestors and Harold B. Carruth's book,
"Carruth Family," provides key information for my beliefs found there. I highly
recommend these books to those interested in the history of the Carruth family.
Best Wishes,
Harvey Carrouth
Ps. - The first two books mentioned above concern what has commonly been labeled as the
southern branch of the Carruth family stemming from the three brothers who immigrated
together from Antrim County, Ireland, in 1729. They were Walter, Adam, and Alexander.
The last book referenced above concerns the Carruth family as a whole and list many
branches of the Carruth family spelled many ways. I believe all the Carruth family, at
least that I have been able to find record of, came from Scotland around the area of the
Clyde River. However, further back in history, you can find that this area was settled by
Cruthin from Ireland. Who knows what we may find out about all this in the future :>)
