WILL OF JOHN CARRUTH 1.
IN THE NAME OF GOD, Amen; The Tenth day of April, 1771, I John Carruth of Northborough, in
the County of Worcester, and Province of Massachusetts Bay, in New England, Yeoman, being
weak and infirm in body but of a sound and disposing mind and memory, Thanks be given unto
God, and calling unto mind the mortality of my Body and that it is appointed unto all men
once to die, I do make and ordain this my last will and testament, That is to say,
Principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hands of God who gave
it, and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried, in a decent Christian manner at the
Direction of my Executor: not doubting but at the General Resurrection I shall receive the
same again by the Mighty Power of God, and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it
has pleased God to bless me, in this life, I give, devise, and dispose thereof in the
following manner and form:
Imprimis, I give and bequeath to my beloved wife, Jemima, all my Household Furniture and
wearing apparel to be disposed of as she shall think fit; also the improvement of the East
End of my dwelling House, also two cows, one of which to be kept, also two sheep, one of
which to be kept, also I give her Twelve Bushels of Indian Corn, Four of Rye and half a
bushel of Wheat, and half a bushel of Beans Yearly and also sufficient Wood for her fire
Annually.
Item: I give and bequeath to my eldest son John, all my real estate and the rest of my
personal estate, he paying all my just debts, and complying with the terms respecting his
Mother as aforesaid and paying to the rest of my Children each a certain sum as below
directed. Item: I give and bequeath to each of my other children the sums following, that
is to say: to James Five Shillings, to Jonas one Pound, Six Shillings and Eight Pence, to
Nathan one Pound Six Shillings and Eight Pence, to Josiah Six Pounds, Thirteen Shillings
and Four Pence, to William Four Pounds, to Jemima Five Shillings, to Lucy, Sarah and Lydia
Four Pounds each to be paid by my son John; that is to say to pay James, Jonas, Nathan and
Jemima, in one year after my decease and to pay the rest of the children according to
their respective ages, the particular sums herein given to them, making but a year between
each payment. And I do hereby constitute and appoint my son John sole executor of this my
last Wil!
l and Testament, revoking and disannuling all other and confirming this and no other.
