I wanted to talk with you a bit about our new Query Board
and some of the rationale for what I've done.
Quite a few of our subscribers have talked with me about
the need for some type of bulletin board where we could
post a message that would remain visible for a period of
time. Something which would allow responses which could
also be posted.
To do this as an individual would be a lot of work and pretty
time consuming. I currently spend 2-3 hours every day dealing
with bounced messages because people change ISP and don't
bother to unsubscribe or with problems people have in getting
mail, etc. I am happy to pay the RootsWeb sponsor fees and to
devote that amount of time to helping our Family genealogy.
There are currently a couple of members who are very unhappy
because of the Query Board notifications being sent to the List.
I chose to have these brief "subject notices" sent as opposed
to posting the entire text of messages or doing nothing at all.
To try to deal with the Query Boards on an individual basis as we
do with our Family List would double the administrative work. I
don't have that much time available.
At this point, my mail is running about 20 to 1 in favor of having these
brief notices posted to all our Family List. I understand other points
of view, however, I believe that this will greatly increase the exposure
of our efforts and after all that's what these mailing lists are about.
