I've been researching the Dawes rolls for my family and am stumped. My
gggrandmother was named Almeda Carroll daughter of James F and Melvina.
She was married to Robert F Johnson and had my ggrandmother Addie
Johnson. When he died she remarried Brutus Thompson and lived in
Tallequah I.T.
Now that I've given the background-- In the dawes rolls there actually
is a record for just one person named Almeda Thompson, and she lived in
Tallequah, and her parents coincidentally were Carrolls. Unfortunately
their first names were wrong. Her father was James Franklin Carroll. On
the card, her father is listed as D. H. Carroll. Her mother's name was
Melvina E. and it's listed on the card as Jennie. Her husband's name was
listed as David L, not Brutus Edgar. She had one child who was named
Norma Viola and guess what, Almeda did indeed have a daughter named
Viola. David's boys are named George and John, and Almeda's boys were
named 1-Unknown, and 2- John. They are also the same ages.
So, they had the same name, had 3 kids with the same names, lived in the
same city and had the same maiden name? Coincidence? Possibly, but I
still haven't given up trying to make these errors the census takers.
Maybe I want it to work out, but Almeda wasn't as common as Mary and
Nancy, and the last name Carroll rarely ever appeared on the census
cards, it isn't exactly Johnson. And they lived in the same city--
neighbors who had the same name and married men with the same last name.
It is possible and stranger things have happened in my searches, but I'm
not willing yet to write it off as not being my family.
So, the point of my letter ( yes I really do have one) is to ask if any
of you know who this D.H and Jennie Carroll are and if any of them had a
daughter named Almeda who married a David L Thompson. If you do--
please e-mail me so that I can stop working on this puzzle.
Thank you
