Irish Emigrants
Your contribution to this page is welcome. We are looking for ships lists or
other sources that document the emigration from Ireland of groups of
individuals, for addition to this database. Contributions should be plain
ASCII, and include as many of the catagories below as possible.
This section was begun with a list of 5879 persons, contributed by Colette
(steele(a)tir.com). She got the list off a genealogical bulletin board. From
examining the contents, I determined that the material was copied from the
book "Handbook on Irish Genealogy" by Donal F. Begley, so I assume it was he
who first created the list. Someone copied the information into a database,
(which is an acceptable use under copyright law, as information can not be
copyrighted, only the form of expression) and provided the comma delimited
format to the genealogical bulletin board. We are indebted to all these folks
for making this material available. This data ends with the source reference
#1.
Another 576 names were contributed by Faye Moran. She copied these names from
an article called "Irish Immigrants to New England" by Michael J. O'Brien,
which was published about 1920 in a book called "New World Immigrants". Names
from this list end with the Source reference #2.
Over a hundred more names were contributed by Dan Wilson (dan.wilson(a)asu.edu)
who copied the names from the ship BOWDITCH (out of Boston) on it's arrival
in New York from Liverpool on 27 May 1839. The comment section on Dan's list
includes the passenger number (pn), and the source reference is #3.
I have taken the data and sorted it by surname, then put each group of names
beginning with the same letter in a separate file (more or less). The data is
still in comma delimited format, but I have rearranged both the field order
and record order to make it easier to decipher. You need to examine a listing
carefully to determine what information it holds, as there are 12 fields, and
rarely are they all used for any one entry. Note the commas: when there is a
comma with no information before it, that represents an empty field -- data
for that field was not available.
Here are the field names and descriptions:
1) Surname, The individuals last name.
2) Firstname, The individuals first and middle names.
3) Age, The individuals age.
4) Religion, The individuals religion.
5) Origin, Usually blank, when used this lists the individuals home, often a
townland or parish, but sometimes just Ireland.
6) Occupation, The individuals occupation or status (such as widow, child,
etc.)
7) From, For ship lists, this is the port of embarkation, but some lists were
derived from others sources, like parish records, in which case it would be
the parish the group of people emigrated from.
8) Year, The date of emigration (often listed as a span of years for sources
other than ship lists) may be an exact date or just the year. Exact dates are
probably the date the ship sailed.
9) Ship, The name of the ship. For lists derived from other sources, the
transcriber has put a number here, such as #21, which refers to the order of
the list in the original publication.
10) Debarkation, Port for which the ship was destined.
11) Other Sometimes lists a place of ultimate destination for the immigrant,
other times lists the ship's captain or some other detail.
12) Source# Lists the source (described above) from which we received this
information.
