Is anyone acquainted with Daniel Carroll who married Susan (Sukey) Jones in
Caswell County, NC in January of 1800? Both Daniel and Susan were born about
1780. Census records sometimes say VA, sometimes NC. They died in Robertson
County, TN. Daniel first about 1856, then Susan after 1860.
Some of their children were Solomon (my guy), Margaret (who married a Cheek),
Agnes (who married a Holman), and Willie (may have been pronounced Wiley,
since Solomon named a son Wiley, and Willie turns up spelled both ways). Two
other sisters married a Cheek and a Honeycutt.
Solomon was born about 1801 and probably married about 1824. The most
probable location for this marriage is Tennessee, but I haven't been able to
find the marriage. His wife's first name was Sytha/Sitha. This is not a
nickname. It is pronounced exactly as it appears, and is handed down through
the family to more recent times. I don't know her maiden name.
Solomon and Sitha had two sons, Harvey and Wiley, born 1825 and 1828. Harvey
married Martha Fox in Calloway County, Kentucky. I can't find Wiley's
marriage, but her first name was Manerva, and on some of the children's
marriage records, they give their mother's maiden name as "Mathis." Some
records say she was born in TN. Others say IL. Wiley nearly always wrote his
name as Wiley J. Carroll.
I expect Solomon died before 1840. Sytha may have married a second time to a
man named Hicks. She for sure married Titus Fox (most likely Martha's
father), in Calloway County, KY in the 1840s. Harvey and Martha married a
short time later, with Harvey only 16 years old. (Their first child was born
just a few months later, which might help explain the young man's marriage.)
Martha was a little older than Harvey. Harvey and Martha went back to
Robertson County, TN and lived near his grandfather, Daniel. Titus and Sitha
Fox, and Wiley J. Carroll disappeard off the face of the earth for more than
10 years. I can't find them in 1850. The same is true of James and Margaret
Cheek, Solomon's sister and brother-in-law. I hear tell they went to
Illinois, but I know not the county. Nor could I locate them there.
But by 1860, Titus and Sitha Fox, Harvey and Martha Carroll, Wiley and
Manerva Carroll, and Agnes and William Holman were all in Butler County, KY.
Anyone? Even if these folks aren't in your family line, I sure would
appreciate it if you'd take a look in all of the 1850 census records that you
might have on hand, to see if these families are in your area.
