This letter goes with the letter, Carroll, Carrell Va, Ky
Now in support of this hypothesis I will ;.resent to following
information:
On 4 October 1861, John L. Carroll was born, a son of John Carroll
(1812-1886) and Mary Ann Rhodes. The vital statistics record of this
birth
states John Carroll, the father was born in Fairrfax county, Virginia,
and
the mother was born in Bedford County, Virginia.
The 1850 Federal Census for Christian County, Kentucky, states
William Carroll (1777-1861) was born in Maryland. In 1860 the census record
states he was born in Virginia. I feel the 1850 record is the correct one.
By
1860, William was quite elderly and it is probable that he either gave it
incorrectly or someone else supplied the information that may not have
been
correct. Search of the census record of Fairfax County, Virginia, reveals
no Carrolls listed in 1800, but in 1810, a William Carroll, Thomas
Carroll,
John Carroll and Dorothy Carroll were listed. This record will be
presented
below. In 1830, William, John and Dorothy were in Christian County, and
land records and tax records indicate that Thomas, though dead by that
date, had been in Christian County also during the period before 1820.
William Carroll's oldest son, James Carroll was born in Virginia in 1802
and another son, Wil.liam Harrison Carroll, was born in that state in
1812.
It would seem likely that the families moved to Fairfax County by or
before
1802 and remained there until at least 1812, before emigrating to
Christian
County. I found no evidence from Fairfax land records that any of the
Carrolls owned land in that county. It is probable they were tenant
farmers.
I am of the opinion that the Carrolls were originally from Maryland but
moved before 1802 to Fairfax County, Virginia. It is to be rioted that
Fairfax County is adjacent to the Vi rg i nia-Maryland boundary,
opposite
Prince Georges County, Maryland. I have been unable to find records in
Maryland that clearly relate to this branch of the Carroll. family.
There was a prominent Carroll family who settled in Maryland at a very
early date. They seem to have descended from one Daniel Carroll. Some of
the family became wealthy, and one, Charles Carroll, was a signer of the
Declaration of Independence, I have as yet found no evidence that the
Daniel
Carroll line was directly related to our line of Carrolls. It may be they
were remotely related, but Sister Mary Virginia Geiger in her book,
Daniel
Carroll, II: One Man and His Descendants, 1730-1978 (Virginia State
Library)
felt the two family names, i.e. Carroll and Carrell, applied to two
distinct
amd different family lines. It is to be noted that William Carrell used
the
Carrell spelling, and this may be related to Sister Geiger,s idea.
Thanks
