Ruth,
That is a very interesting point (ie the pronunciation of the name Michel). I don't
know, of course, what the pronunciation was meant to be. I do know I have a number of
ancestors with that spelling, and I have assumed it to be pronounced Michael. A goodly
number of these ancestors have been German/Swiss, and I cannot imagine them being named
Mitchell. However, with census takers, anything seems to be possible. These Hinchers moved
to Wilkes Co.,NC, where I believe all their children were brought up. I did read in some
Quaker notes of the marriage of one of the Hinchers marrying a sister of my
gggggrandmother, Rebecca Holdaway Bumgarner, in Wilkes Co. Her name was Elizabeth
Holdaway. I gather from this that both families must have been Quaker, since there was no
mention of marrying out of faith. This kind of incongruous with the fact that Elizabeth
and Rebecca's father, Henry Holdaway, was a Revolutionary War Veteran. In another part
of my family, one of my ancestors was exco!
mmunicated from the Quaker Church for dancing, and enlisting to fight in the war. Do you
think your line of Hincher's fits in with mine? The name Hincher is supposedly a
variation of the name, Hinshaw.

of the name, Hinshaw.
