Our CARROLL Family discussion list is just a few days more than a month old. I thought it
a good
time to share some information with all the members of the list. I am the so-called
"listowner" which
means I get the error messages from RootsWeb. <VBG>.
As of today we have 42 members, which is pretty good in my estimation. It seems to be
building
up at about the same rate as the PHILLIPS List, which I also manage, did.
We have had relatively few problems since the list started, mostly from outside
influences.
I started the CARROLL list for several reasons, among them :
1. My wife is a CARROLL and she thought it a good idea
2. My subscription to RootsWeb allows me two lists, and
3. No one else was doing it and I thought a discussion list for the CARROLL family
was needed.
I have prevailed upon a internet acquaintance, who we found is also a third cousin of my
wifes', to
co-manage the list with me. His name is James Carroll and he has been an active Carroll
family
researcher for some time. They are both descendants of Nathan Carroll, Sr., the father of
two
brothers, Joseph Martin Carroll and Nathan Carroll, jr. who crossed the frozen Mississippi
in 1879
moving their families from Indiana to Missouri. They settled in Missouri and later the
Nathan Carroll
branch of the family moved to Oklahoma and the two families pretty much lost touch until
very
recently.
We have several members of the list who have been actively researching Carroll family and
have
web pages - Bruce Hunt is one who comes to mind as well as James. There are others and
these
will help find and bring other Carroll researchers to the List. When we reach a
membership of
150-200 members, we will begin to see fairly substantial activity. Until we reach that
number,
the list will be fairly quiet. Anything we can do to advertise and promote the list will
help us reach
that number. The Phillips List is just a bit over a year old and has 342 members, so I
think we can
expect similar development of the Carroll List..
I think the web pages operated by List members should be advertised fairly frequently on
the List,
and individual members should post queries probably once a month, considering
the growth in membership that we will see.
As a listowner, my primary function is to see that the list function as smoothly as
possible. I have
not tried to establish a fixed set of rules. I do ask, however, that any flaming be
off-list and that
messages/queries to the list be directly related to Carroll genealogy. Other than that,
let's all
enjoy the List and hope it helps us in our family research.
I am not a genealogist but if anyone needs help in using the list I will try my best to
provide it.

As soon as I gather a bit of information and get James up to speed, I'm sure he will
also give
you his address. There is no established policy for co-management and we will work
things
out as we go.
Good hunting and I really look forward to working with you.
