Feel a bit guilty about disturbing all those fascinating CD people. So a
poor exchange - a posting on Carroll progress to date.
Basically researching Lennan but thought of doing something on great
grandmother Hannah Lennan (ne Carroll) b.4 Dec 1853, Dublin South, Ireland,
d.27 3 1913. Was lucky to find parents John Carrol_ and Anna in baptismal
records indexed by the Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Heritage Centre (price a
reasonable 10 pounds). Siblings known to me from an undated tree my father
prepared many years ago were Timothy and Ned. Knew Timothy emigrated to New
Zealand so thought this was a lost cause, apart from school records
identification obtained from the very active Dun Laoghaire Genealogical
Society (incidentally they are in the process also of indexing important
Dublin South graveyards which can be a useful source for pre-1864
registration Irish data for that area). Saw a NZ entry in the Genealogical
Research Directory looking for Dublin Carrolls. Made contact. Although not
my Carrolls that were being researched, the GRD entrant very kindly came
back to me with many relevant references and dates (even including NZ GRO
numbers) and put me in touch with a second cousin once removed who provided
me with almost all NZ information, it is still coming - including photos,
on the branch, as well as many Irish relations (all new surnames to research
- no Carrolls left on this line). My NZ relation, in her seventies, provided
me with full names, dates, emigrant ship etc., quite unusual from my
experience of information provided by non-genealogists.
So am now much further advanced on my Carrolls than the Lennans, which I had
initially thought should be easier.
However, still two possible additional branches to trace:
A Laurence born in Merrion/Booterstown (Dublin South) circa 1800, and;
Ned (Edward) in same area around 1850.
Suspect that getting back beyond John, b. before 1773, may be a tall order.
The moral is that unexpected breaks can happen and sometimes from the far
side of the globe. Maybe some of the CD people have the keys to our puzzles. :)
