I've just joined the group. Is anyone out there have infomation on my line?
CARROLL
Our Anthony (below) was supposedly of the same family as Charles Carroll of
Carrollton, and even lived in the same town. The relationship is not known. I
initially doubted the relationship, because the Maryland Carroll's were
primarily Catholic, however there was a Protestant branch of the Carroll
family.
The Irish Carroll's were very active in early Maryland history. I have found a
lot of fascinating information on these Carroll's (the best source was "Daniel
Carroll of Litterlauna" by Ambrose Carroll-Moorman). The named Anthony, James
and Charles all very common to these families as they are in ours.
The information on our family came from history books on the Upper Monongahela
Valley, Monongalia County Court Records, Preston County Court Records, along
with family sources, such as Linda Unger Royce.
ANTHONY CARROLL
He was born in 1725 in Scotland. He was a British sailor who had been released
from military duties, because of being over age. With his wife Mary Donaway he
had immigrated to America by 1770. He was a weaver by trade. Anthony first
settled in Annapolis, Anne Arundel Co., Maryland.
He then took the advice to go west and went to Morgantown, Monongalia Co.,
Virginia. Here he found the Morgans (a large family) and the Indians involved
in arguments that made it unsafe for bystanders, so he along with others moved
into the fort at Granville. By 1776 he had bought the Kern's stone-house farm
(settled in 1774) along the Cheat River at Rock Forge, adjoining Dunkard
Bottom (the largest body of truly level land in present day Preston Co., known
for its sandy untillable soil), near Kingwood, Virginia. He patented these 400
acres in 1787. Later he bought a mill at Uffington, from a Morgan. He also
built a mill at Dellslow and operated both mills and the farm for several
years. He patented an additional 240 acres of land on Decker's Creek adjoining
Zebulon Hoge's in 1789.
In 1791 he was called to testify on behalf on Owen Davey who was accused of
stealing a canoe from Thomas Evans. Davey was ultimately fined one penny.
Anthony and his son James were both called to testify in 1794 on behalf of
Baldwin Weaver, a blacksmith who was accused of assaulting Richard Merrifield.
Weaver was found innocent. In 1798 John Scott was called to testify on behalf
of the Commonwealth against Anthony and James Carroll for Anthony's assault on
Dudley Evans (Anthony was roughly 73 years old at that time).
Anthony and Mary had two children. After Mary's death he married a second wife
(name unknown), who died shortly after the marriage and had no issue. After
her death he married Rose Hall by whom he had another child. After her death
he took a fourth wife, a Mrs. Walls. At age 96 he walked from Morgantown to
Kingwood 23 miles away, in one day. Some of his descendants claim it was to
see a lady. He then walked back a few days later. Anthony died in 1832 at age
107.

Kirk family). In 1800 he purchased the 400 acre farm on Green's Run near
Kingwood for $100 (the farm was first patented in 1784). Some say that one of
their fathers gave them the tract with a cabin on it as a wedding present, of
course this was eight years after they married. The tract was in the family
until the 1960's when the tract was sold, and housing developments were built
there. They had four children. He served as a major in the militia in 1806.
