My 4th great grandmother, Barbara, was Cherokee. She married Leonard Carroll in the 1790s
and they were living in the Pendleton District of SC in 1800 with two boys. The name
Barbara means "strange" or "foreign". (just thought I'd throw that
in there)
So Carol, have you found a way to bridge into researching the Cherokee from that time
period? I have a feeling that Leonard might have been killed during his service in the SC
Militia during the War of 1812 as I find nothing for him after that time. But then again I
don't find Barbara either. Being that she was Cherokee, I don't know if she would
have been able to collect a pension for Leonard's service. I don't know if she
would have gone back to living within the Cherokee Nation either. Their two sons show up
in Northern (W)Va as adults around 1822. But I never found Barbara or what happened to
Leonard.
I don't know if there's a way of researching the Cherokee of that time or the
"rules" of how they were accepted if applying for a pension for a husbands death
in the war. There was no pension applied for on his behalf.
If you have any clues or suggestions, I'm all ears.
