There is an extensive, well documented article on your Dempsey James Carroll entitled
"Demse Carrell: A Study" in Volume 27 (1989) of the MAGAZINE OF VIRGINIA
GENEALOGY.
Names tend to be used over again in families. The Dempsey I am trying to research named a
son Dempsey who entered the Revolutionary War from Duplin County, NC. It appears Dempsey,
Jr. lived briefly after the war in Duplin then moved to SC and later to AL. He was living
in AL when he applied for a Rev. War pension.
Your Dempsey James had a son and at least one grandson named Dempsey, didn't he? I
studied your Dempsey some years ago trying to see if that family ever came south. If my
memory serves me some of them moved to KY, but I never found any evidence they came to NC.
I think the NC Dempsey may be the father of my known ancestor, Alexander Carrell. I
don't have a birth date for him, but I think he died between 1793 and 1800. Now what I
want to know is WHO were his parents, WHERE did he come from, WHEN did he come to NC, and
HOW is he related to the other Carrolls who lived around him.
There were 10 Carrolls living in the same area near Six Runs Creek listed in the 1790
census. If there is a person researching the Duplin/Sampson County Carrolls in NC with
whom I have not corresponded, please write to me.
