Message Board Post:
I read the information you gave to the other person regarding Carroll's in Murray
County. Two things caught my eye - the name Mollie and someone with the first name (I
believe first name) of Hester.
I have hit the proverbial wall trying to find a block of my grandmother's life. I do
not think she is the Mollie you reference; however, several people called her Mollie.
Please read on. I am trying to find out about where my grandmother lived after her mother
died, and if she was ever married to a Hester before she married my grandfather, Wilburn
C. Adams, Sr. Any help would be MOST appreciated.
The first information we have on Mary Elizabeth Carroll (Hester??) Adams is the 1880
census for Gilmer County. She is shown living with her grandmother Caroline (Meeks)
Carroll, a widow, and Caroline's children. Caroline's age in this census is
shown to be 64 which Ray Payne believes to be incorrect. Caroline was married to a John
Hill Carroll. One of Caroline's children is a daughter named Susaner Carroll who is
the mother of Mary Elizabeth and William Andrew. Mary Elizabeth was shown to be 4 years
of age in the 1880 census. I simply am trying to find out about my grandmother from her
birth until around 1907, when she married my Grandfather Wilburn Cass Adams, Sr. My
Father is Wilburn Cass Adams, Jr. Mary Elizabeth died 7-22-1966 in Chatsworth, GA.
I would love to know more about her and what happened to her after her mother died in
1886. The main reason I am searching is to try and find her relation to a George H. and
C. J. Hester. After Grandmother died, I found lots of old receipts in a trunk. Most
belonged to my Grandfather Adams and were dated after 1907. Several, however, were in the
names of G. H. or C. J. Hester and were dated between 1895 and 1905 (approx). All the
receipts were from Chatsworth or Dalton with the exception of one. It was from Cartecay,
Ga (Ellijay) and looks to be in the name of a W.W. Hester or a M. M. Hester and was dated
1903. I recall the name Hester being mentioned years and years ago, but no one who is
alive now can remember why. I do not know if my grandmother married a Hester, lived with
or was adopted by Hester's after her Mother's death, or if her Mother married a
Hester. Lots of speculation. I did find one piece of documentation that said Mary
Elizabeth Carroll Hester.
I found a C. J. Hester (at the Murray County Library) born in 1866 who lived in Bull Pen,
Murray County) in the 1920's. When doing a search on George H. Hester, the only
close one I found was in the 1880 census. A George Hester was shown as a farm laborer,
age 19, who lived with a Rufus Owens in Coosawattee, Gordon County, GA. Ray said our
Carroll's are shown in later censuses living in Calhoun and/or Floyd County though I
have not been able to find them.
Sorry to be so long, but I would dearly love to fill in this gap.
Thanks.
