Hi, Billy,
I have Carrolls in Murray county, but if they are related it will be remote (see
conjecture at end of this).
But I do have census info and a possible/probable family for your Thomas. The leap is
pretty reasonable and can probably be confirmed from probate, guardianship, and land
records.
Here goes:
I'm assuming your Carroll b. ca1871 with wife Mollie is the Tom, age 50, in the 1920
census in Murray, wife Mollie 42, they have children Frank. Hester, Opal, Dee. (If
that's not them, then all the following is useless!!) Living very near them are a
John Carroll 20 and a Henry Carroll 30.
The 1910 census shows Tom 37 and Mollie 31, in Murray, McDonald District, children are
Henry 16, Stella 14, John 12, Mollie 10, Frank 6, Ester 2. Again, if you know these
aren't yours then the following won't work. Nearby is the family of James M.
Carroll 57.
In 1900 Murray, McDonald District are Marion Carrel 44 with several children, one is
Mollie (just a possible remote namesake after his sister-in-law). They live next to a John
Gregory (see next). Lee Carrel 40 is indexed for same page on Heritage Quest, but
can't find him there or near; this Lee should/could turn out to be the Leander
described in 1870, but he doesn't show up in 1880, so no guarantee).
The 1880 Murray census shows:
Thomas Carrol [sic] 8 (GA TN SC), is a nephew in the house of James Beaver 47 TN and
Elizabeth Beaver 49 SC, in Spring Place p. 546
Also in 1880 young John, Mary, and William Carroll are living with Jathan Gregory p. 482,
Murray, McDonald. Nearby is Marian Carroll 22 TN with John Gregory p. 478a Murray
McDonald (this should turn out to be James M. Carroll)
In 1870 is:
Henry Carrol 62 SC, has young wife Henrietta 31 NC, and a family with kids down to 2 years
old, so they could have another son very soon. They are in Spring Place p. 545b., kids
James M. 12 TN, Leander 10 GA, John N. 8 GA, Mary 6 GA, William 2 GA
Then in 1860:
Henry 50 SC and Henrietta in Murray Hoplin's Mills with kids James M. 3 TN, Leander 1
GA.
So, I'm proposing that Thomas Carroll was born shortly after the 1870 census to Henry
and Henrietta Carroll, that they died in the 1870s, that the children were farmed out to
Beaver relatives and the Gregory family, that various members of the family were in
McDonald and Spring Place at various times. Guardianship records may do the trick on
this.
I did one quick check online and there is a descendant of Henry Carroll who said Henry
Carroll md. Henrietta Beaver 27 Mar 1856 in Murray. My records and online primary sources
don't confirm it, but it looks to come from family info and should turn out to be a
good lead.
So, hope this possible lead turns into something and good luck in your search.
Regards from California,
Pam Miller
P.S. Here's my much more remote conjecture, only worthy of a P.S. My Carrolls were
in the Cisco area of Murray county coming out from Rutherford NC after being in SC. There
is a Henry Carroll in Rutherford records but I don't have any details. My Dennis
Carroll had a brother Willis who married Ester, and wouldn't it be nice if she were
the namesake for Thomas and Mollie's daughter Ester. However, Willis and Ester are
born in the 1750s and I don't have their children or knowledge that the name Ester was
passed down regularly in that line. Probably just wishful thinking.
