Hi Faye,
Yes, I remember that we have chatted before, and I have returned many times to your
website to see if anything new about Stephen was
there. Didn't you at one point have on the web page or tell me that his brothers may
have settled in Sampson County, or did I just
think it might be possible?
If your Stephen was in Orange County when his son Benjamin was born in 1753 and remained
in Orange County until his death in 1828, I
don't think it possible that it was the SAME Stephen as the one in Sampson County.
You see from the letter I wrote to the CARROLL-L
list that the man I believe to be a brother to my Alexander was in Sampson County at least
from 1784 to 1802. In 1790 he had one
male under age 16, four females, and one slave. Was your Stephen listed in the 1790 census
for Orange County?
I don't believe the two Stephens are the same person. Now I would venture a guess
that our Stephen might be a nephew of your
Stephen. One of our Sampson group who descends from Elisha Carroll says the story in
their family is that 5 brothers came from
County Cork and sailed into Raleigh. Well, you can't sail into Raleigh! But there
might have been 5 brothers. My Alexander's
story mentioned coming into Wilmington just as your Stephen did.
I'm pretty sure that Alexander is the son of Dempsey,Sr. I think Dempsey lived in
Halifax County, NC about 1759 near Thomas Carroll
before coming to Duplin/Sampson. Dempsey is more nearly the age of your Stephen. My
Alexander is about the age of your Stephen's
son Benjamin. I think Dempsey and Thomas came on frpm Halifax to Duplin/Sampson. There
was also an early William and an early John
in Duplin, but we know very little about them. Could they have all been brothers?
Stephen, Thomas, Dempsey, William, and John???
Has a male with the surname Carroll been tested from your family? That would be the best
way to see if we are related. One
descendant of Michael Carroll of Orange County, NC has been tested, and he does NOT match
our Sampson men who have been tested. If
you don't correspond with him, I think you should try to compare notes with him. If
you would like I could give your address to
him. There have some others been tested who do match with him. They are in Blue at
http://www.childtalk.com/History/carrollfamilydna.html
Our Sampson County men are colored in orange on that chart.
I don't think we have a match YET, but let's keep at it.
Lura
