Many people think they are linked to Charles Carroll of Carrollton, including myself at
one time! Remember CC of C only had one living son. Too broadly generalize there are two
groups of Carrolls divided by religion one protestant and one Catholic. If your Carroll
ancestors were protestant as mine were and settled early in the PA, NC and SC areas they
were most likely Ulster-Scots are what is commonly referred o as "Scotch-Irish".
These Carrolls came from Northern Ireland circa 1730's landing in the Philadelphia
area. Many eventually followed the "Catawba Trail" traveling south and settling
in areas such as Orange County NC, Mecklenberg County, NC and the Waxhaw area bordering NC
and SC. Most of this early travel occurred before the Rev War.
