I've poked around a little on
Ancestry.com but, as you probably already know, he's
not easily found in 1900. Some of the things that I do when I am having trouble finding
someone is to use only partial spellings of the given and/or surname, for instance: jac*
car* and then narrow the search by putting in the birthyear and birthplace when I have
that information. Keeping in mind that the birthplace is not always consistent from
census to census (and sometimes the birthyear too).
Another suggestion would be to look for the children. In 1880, he is HoH, age 52,
widowed, in Hamilton Co., Jackson Twp., IN. Living with him is Alice, 17, dau, and
?S.H.Delta F., 20, son. See if you can find Alice or Delta in 1900. Or his other
children- 1860: John (9) [I think this is John S. with whom he is living in 1910], Rachel
(8) [I think John & Rachel are the children of his first wife, Elizabeth (found in
1850 census)]; 1870: Delta (9), A R (7, Alice in 1880), Rosa (5/12) [I think Delta, Alice
and Rosa are the children of his second wife, Mahala]. Rosa may have died before 1880.
She isn't listed with Jacob in 1880.
One of the unusual transcriptions that I got for one of my Carrolls was 'Canoll'.
The r's had been written very loopy and spread out. I knew without a doubt where they
were living, but didn't get a hit when I searched for the various Carrol spellings.
The only way I found it was by going page by page through Ancestry's records. This is
only practical when the area you are searching is fairly small and you are pretty certain
where they were living.
I hope this helps you. Good luck in your search.
Jane
