I have an Anthony Carroll b. 1833, could this be a son or relative of the
Anthony in your message. I have records of Anthony being in Montreal Quebec
area of Canada in 1857. Some records say he was born in Ireland, others say
Canada. (Family hid there Irish ness and were Catholic ) Family history has it
that the children were sent to France for school. (Maybe Migrated with a French
family??) Sounds like it could be a rich Carroll family that had to migrate
due to English persecution. I know they had knowledge about race horses and
the woolen industries.
Is there any info on any Carroll children that went to school in France?
THanks, Joan

Patrick Carroll b 1761 d 29 Jul 1839 Annah/Dorrah. Ireland
In the Title Applotment of Lorrah and Dorrah in the Barony of Lower Ormond,
County of Tipperary, Diocese of Killaloe in 1824 Patrick Carroll was the
lessee for 70 Irish acres of William Clark's in the Townland of Annagh. At
the same Tithe taking of Dorrah was a Daniel Meara, lesee of 115 Irish acres
of John Brereton's of Kilregane and also a lesee (Meara and Dooly) of 105
Irish acres of William Clark.
Patrick Carroll and Daniel Meara rented from the same man, William Clark.
Patrick was buried in the Dominican Priory of Lorrah (Ormond Historical
Society, Vol 6, Lorrah Parish, No 18)
"Sacred to the memory of Patrick Carroll of Annagh who departed this life 29
Jul 1839, aged 77. May he rest in peace."
It is believed but not documented by other than the association of the 2 men
above that Patrick's son Thomas Carroll married Daniel Meara's daughter,
Anne in Kilregane. Daniel Meara and his wife Margaret Kennedy are also
buried in the Dominican Priory.
According to Brian Mitchell's "A Guide to Irish Parish registers" Lorrah
Parish and Annagh were both served by the Roman Catholic Parish of Lorrah,
Townland Annagh, County Tipperary North Riding, Barony of Lower Ormond,
Lorrha Parish, PLU Borrisokane, Province of Munster (another source gives
the PLU as Parsonstown) Townland Kilregane. The RC Parish of Lorrha, Diocese
of Killaloe, Archdiocese of Limerick, contains 2 civil parishes Lorrah and
Dorrah that are in separate PLUs and different election districts. There are
two Dorrah Parishes 8 miles apart in different Civil Parishes and have
their people buried in different graveyards.
In May 1840 and in 1850, 1851 Thomas and Ann Carroll were in Riverstown E.D.
Dorrha Parish. In 1848 there were 45 residents. In 1859, 1851 there were
only 25 as a consequence of the famine.
The Thomas Carroll family immigrated to America in 1855 according to the
declaration made by his son Daniel in the 1900 Census of Cincinnati,
Hamilton County, OH.
In 1860 the Thomas Carroll family were residing in the 12th ward, Dist. 3, p
747, Post Office Manhattanville, Dwelling House #715 enumerated 27 Jun 1860.
Thomas Carroll died 23 Sep 1874 in New York City (Death Certificate #187605
at age 65. He was a resident of the United States for 20 years. He died of
Pulmonary Tuberculosis at his residence, 131st St between 10th Ave and
Broadway. He was buried in St Raymond's Cemetery in Westchester. Details of
his death and burial were available from family letters written to family
members in Cincinnati. Daniel, the son of Thomas had moved on to Ohio,
became a soldier in the Civil War and died there 17 Sep 1915.
According to a local and well respected Irish historian in Offaly County,
Paddy Heaney, the family descends from Anthony Carroll, a resident of
Kilregane, who fell into poverty and ignominy after the Irish lands were
confiscated by England and given to English settlers. Anthony was the
brother of Charles, the settler, and most of his children followed their
uncle to the United States. One son returned to live out his days and die in
Ireland. This far I have not been able to identify him or any of his
children. If anyone doing similar research has any "leads" or information
which would help me, I would appreciate hearing from you. Wilma Carroll
