I don't think there is any way William T. Carroll could have been born in Franklin, NC
in 1775. That was Indian Land and remained so until around 1820. Buncombe County was
formed in 1792 from Burke and Rutherford and covered all points west except Indian Land.
Haywood Cty was next in 1808 and then Macon Cty in 1828. Macon was formed from Indian
Lands acquired by treaty. Franklin became the county seat of Macon County. There is a
Franklin County "downstate" as we say here in the mtns, but it was not formed
until 1779 from Butte County. There were Carrolls in Macon County, as well as old
Haywood County early on, but just not as early as 1775. Wish I could find a connection
between my John Carroll (or Carrel) who married Jane Jaynes and those Carrolls in Macon
County....Mine were 25 -30 miles away in the Oconaluftee Settlement, but don't seem to
connect.
