I have never heard of Polly being a nickname for Sarah. I do know that Sally is accepted
as the nickname for Sarah. I have always heard that Polly is a nickname for Mary, and have
seen it very often in my 30 years of research. An interesting note on Polly/Mary:
Legend has it that the Cherokees dearly loved a white woman named Mary, called, of course,
Polly. The Cherokees do not pronounce a "P" in their lanquage, so the word came
out "Qually" or "Qualla." Hence the name of the Reservation of the
Eastern Band of the Cherokee: the Qualla Boundary. There are numerous descendants of
their dearly loved Mary in the area today.
Incidentally, my Carrolls/Carrells were in the Oconaluftee Settlement early on (early
1800s), later known as Qualla Town, and now known as the reservation. It would have been
Haywood County, NC at that time, and there are numerous records still in existance for
these Carrolls.
