Hello,
I am desperately searching for the parents of Benjamin Carroll b. 1811 in either NC or KY.
Here are some facts that I have gathered in my research.
l. Benjamin came to Orange Co., IN by 1832 (when he is listed as marrying Sarah Sinclair)
and bought hundreds of acres of land in that county. He would have been very young...in
his early twenties. We assume that he came by this money by inheritance.
2. A Joseph Carroll owned property next to him in Jackson Twp., Orange Co., IN in 1850. He
married Mahala Lawrence 1846 in Crawford Co., IN. He lists being born in KY (per census).
His birth date is abt. 1825 (per census). He moved into Crawford Co., IN by the 1860
census. He died before the 1870 census. He names one of his sons "Benjamin".
Benjamin had a son "Joseph" that they called "Little Joe" making the
assumption of these two being siblings even more believable.
3. A William Carroll b. abt 1807 in KY or VA also came to Orange Co., IN in the
1830's. He had an untimely death in 1843 in the Mexican war. He also bought land in
Orange Co., abt 1838.
4. A David Carroll also moved into the Crawford Co., IN area in the 1830's and bought
land. We have no further facts on him at this point, except that there is a David Carroll
born in KY that married a Denbo listed as dying in Crawford Co., IN. We assume this is the
same person and that he may be a sibling of Benjamins.
5. A Suzannah Carroll b. 1810 in KY married a Josiah Charnes (Carns) in Clark Co., IN in
1831, and then they moved into Orange Co., IN sometime in the 1830's. Her mother, Mary
Carroll b. 1790 in NC, is listed with them in the 1850 Orange Co., IN census.
While we have found no evidence tying these people together, their similar ages, places of
birth, and times they appeared in Orange or Crawford Co., IN makes it very suspicious that
they may be siblings or cousins.
Since Suzannah Carroll was married in Clark Co., IN, we assume that they may have come
through Clark Co from KY and may be related to the Carroll's mentioned in Clark Co.,
IN
One more thing, since Joseph was born in 1825 in KY, and if he is a brother, they were
still living in KY until then. Thus they should be on the KY 1820 census.
Benjamin Carroll is my ggggrandfather, through his son Hickman>John Hickman>Gladys
m. Claude Waggoner>Wilma, my mother.
Any help you may be able to give on these people would be deeply appreciated!
