My gggg grandfather is said to have been killed in the War of 1812. His son
Anthony Wayne Carroll (Carrel) was born in western PA in 1806, raised in
central OH, and married Balinda Root in Licking Co., OH in 1826, and raised
a large family there near Granville.
I am searching for any clues as to the identity of Anthony Wayne Carroll's
parents and siblings. I suspect his father may have been the Philip Carroll
listed as a military death in the War of 1812, with Captain Robert Gilmore's
Company from OH, county unknown (but probably Jefferson). Only two Carrolls
of any spelling are listed as known casualties of that war who were Philip
Carroll and St. Clair Carroll. My Anthony Wayne Carroll named his first son
Philip, which was never a given name in his wife's family, and so I am led
to think he may have named his first son after his father.
On the other hand family legend has it that Anthony Wayne, whose father was
killed when he was a boy, may have been adopted or raised by a family in
central OH named Carroll (Carrel) and he may have taken their surname as his
own. It is also said that Anthony Wayne (Carroll) had many siblings, all of
whom remain unknown. I am searching for any information about Philip
Carroll or Anthony Wayne Carroll of OH or western PA during the years
1806-1826.
Thank you

Eric,
I know that Hercules, brother to Margaret Carroll, was "of Cincinnati" and
apparently died there in 1890. Their are three Hercules' listed. The first
married Sarah Wheeler. His son, Hercules married Mary Tate Jones. If I
follow the author correctly, Thomas, a brother to the first Hercules also
had a son, Hercules who married Catherine West.
The Ferguson book literally give one page on the Carrolls, and they have
been an elusive crew. I did not see mention of a Anthony or Phillip. Can you
possibly tie them to OH, or NJ, which is where these Carrolls seem to have
settled?
Sorry I could not be of more help-
Laura

Hi Laura,
Not sure if it helps but I see a Hercules Carroll estate file packet from
1841, Lake County, Ohio. Does the given name Anthony or Philip appear in
your Carroll family history?
Eric

And-- 14 other children
Thomas
Elizabeth

Any help w/ Hercules and family would be greatly appreciated!
