Thanks for your answer, Pam. The researcher whom I mentioned in my first message sent
these names as children of Michael and Mary: Mary L. born 1842, Martha born 1841,
Virginia born 1856, Allen born 1852, John born 1856 and Alice born 1858. (I don't
know if one of the two 1845s might be a typo.) But she thought that Sarah might already
have been out of the household at the time these were listed. I don't think she would
mind my quoting her here. "The oldest child living with M.R. and Mary Carroll in
1860 is age 19
(and then ages 17, 14, 6, 4, 2) which means Sarah could have been their daughter just 2
years older than their oldest because Sarah is 21 in 1860." Indeed, Sarah had been
married a little over 5 years at the time of the 1860 census. I have been trying to
contact this researcher this month, but her email address is no longer valid. As I
remember from my research of this family a few years back, I couldn't find M. R. and
Mary in 1850. Do you have that census for them?
