Hi Lura,
I just doublechecked on Ancestry and found their marriage, and it's
ROWAN county, not Dawson. I don't know where the Dawson came from,
but that's what I was given by a distant cousin who is also
researching the family. I'm going to have to change this in my
records.

Elaine,
I think it interesting that the Marriage Bond and the NC Marriage Index both seem to
indicate that Luke Jr. and Elizabeth Murphy were married in Dawson County, NC in 1792. I
have searched before to try to find this county and have been unsuccessful.
There is a list of all present and former NC Counties at the following site, and no
Dawson County is listed.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgenweb/countycode.txt
I think you will also not find a Dawson County on the 1780 or 1790 maps of NC at the
following sites.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/nc1780.htm
http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/nc1800.htm
I believe you will be more apt to locate this family if you expand your search to include
all the counties that MIGHT look like "Dawson" when written hurriedly by some
county clerk - for example "Davidson". I think there was an early Carroll family
in Davidson County, and I think they have a reunion at times.
Since I know nothing about my Dempsey Carrell, Sr. (supposedly the father of my Alexander
in Sampson County, NC) before finding a man I believe to be him in Halifax County, NC in
1759, I have searched briefly as many other families as possible - including Luke. So if
you find a Dempsey or Alexander in Luke's family, please let me know. I do not
believe my Dempsey is the same as the one in Westmoreland and Loudoun Counties in VA or
his son, Dempsey Jr. who moved to KY.
Break your brick wall in 2007,
