My Interests are with the Carrolls found on the 1800 SC, Pendleton District census,
namely:
Leonard Carroll (16-26)
2m under 10
1f (16-26)
James Carroll ((26-45)
3m under 10
2f under 10
1f (10-16)
1f (26-45)
John Carroll ((26-45)
2m under 10
1f under 10
1f (16-26)
Sterling Carroll (over 45)
2m under 10
1f (10-16)
1f (26-45)
I believe that Leonard, James & John are brothers. The three of them are found on two
different SC Militia records that I've found. I'm not sure if Sterling Carroll is
a relation or not.
There is a Benjamin Carroll named on both of those SC Militia records that seem to
indicate that he is a relation or kin to Leonard, James & John. On one of the records
it seems that there was also a Daniel Carroll that might have been related in some sort to
the three "brothers".
I strongly believe that the above mentioned Leonard Carroll to be my 4th G Grandfather.
I've tracked this Leonard on census and other records and have found that by 1810 he
has added three daughters to the family (under 10) and that his wife is no longer with
him, probably due to death. I have also learned that he was born in SC c.1774, parents
unknown. He served in the SC Militia at least from 1800 through 1814 before moving on to
Georgia by 1820. Then sometime in the 1830s he moves over to Alabama by 1840 where he
stays until his death in Coosa County, AL in January 1860.
To document this Leonard Carroll as my 4th G Grandfather, I would need to find that his
wife's name was Barbara and that she was Cherokee Indian, these things I know of my
4th G Grandmother. (this Pendleton District in 1800 sits right next to Cherokee Lands and
Leonard lived and started his family there. His wife could easily have been Cherokee.) It
would be nice to show that one of the two males (under 10) counted on that 1800 census
turns out to be named Samuel as he is my 3rd G Grandfather, born July 20, 1798, who later
named his parents as Leonard & Barbara Carroll.
It would be nice to find a death notice in a newspaper in Coosa County, AL in January 1860
that might name his long lost wife or their children. I am also tracking the James &
John Carroll named on that 1800 SC, Pendleton District census to see if either of their
death notices or Wills, name family members. Any help would be much appreciated and I
would love to hear from anyone if you are connected to any of the Carrolls mentioned
above.
