Lura is exactly right...
The Carroll surname Y-DNA Genera logy Project already has many Carroll men
who have tested, and provided the name, date and place of birth of their
earliest known Carroll ancestor. The brick walls you are facing may
already have fallen, but you would not know of it unless you test.

James,
Another question.....
Has any man with a direct male-only lineage back to your John
(1660-1733) sent a sample of DNA to be tested for the Carroll DNA
Project? If so, which line of the chart is his at
http://www.childtalk.com/History/carrollfamilydnavalues.htm
Our Sampson County, NC descendants are the ones shown in orange. The
first gray line below the orange matches 36 of 37 markers with three
of the orange lines. We do not know his relation to the others. We
do know that ancestor was born in SC in 1808. If one of yours could
send a DNA sample, it would surely help the rest of us, since your
lineage is so well formulated.
Thanks again,
Lura CARROLL Southard
