My Carroll Family had slaves, because they were still living with the family
past the Emancipation Proclamation therefore I believe they must have been
very happy where they were. When my GGG Grandfather left his property and
his cattle to his wife he also provided for the slaves that must have been
part of the family because they were the only others named in the Will-- I
don't however, know what happened to them. I do know that they were in
Illinois at the time. My ancestors came from Washington, DC and Maryland to
start and they moved from there to Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio before
coming to Illinois-- Some of the surnames names were Panny, Degear,
Grammer, White, Cromwell, Treadway, Smith, Love, Burton, Flowers, Welch or
Walch, Yard, Hart, and many more. If any one would like to remark or has
any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me-- Thanks!Julianna

This posting is made as an answer to the question "Are there Black or
Native American Carrolls out there?". My first impulse was to reply to the
E=mail directly but further thought made me realize that my answer needed
to go to a broader audience.
Yes there are many Carroll's of color out here and regardless of how we
came about the name, we are still here. The same would hold true of any
name for any group of people. I cannot imagine what type of racial slur
was bestowed upon the author of the E-mail but I do NOT believe it was
done by a true genealogy searcher. Sincere searches soon realize that you
might find any kind of situation in your search.
It is especially difficult for descendants of slaves to find relatives
before a certain period.and/or to verify if everyone with a certain name
is actually related or just carry the name of a common owner.
I would like to take this oportunity to request that any csearcher of any
race finding a reference to slaves in wills, deeds or any other means,
please post it as an aid to searchers of color. I have seen this done a
few times and would like to now say, thank you, to the ones that have been
so thoughtful.
We all share in that period of our history. It is an eventual fact and
cannot be swept under the rug. Let's accept it and use whatever good might
come out of it.
The author of the E-mail was asking for help in beginning her search. I
have many years of searching and office holding in Genealogy Assoc. If you
will contact me directly via E-mail, I will do whatever I can to help you
get started.
