Women do not have a Y chromosome. Women get one X chromosome from their mother and one X
chromosome from their father, so, genetically speaking they are XX. Males get an X
chromosome from their mother and a Y chromosome from their father, so they are XY. Y DNA
research follows the Y chromosome passed from father to son and so is only for males. As
I understand it, genetic research for women utilizes Mitochondrial DNA. I am no expert in
this area and have not participated in any DNA research. I am a female.
With regard to the Carroll surname, my grandmother was a Carroll (Anna Carroll m. George
Gibbs, 1906, Perry Co., Indiana). Her father was William (b. 1837-1846, probably Co.
Tipperary, Ireland). He died 1889, Perry Co., Indiana. There are no living male
descendants (that I am aware of) for William Carroll.
