OUCH! Now that would really hurt... one's efforts on behalf of
researching the surname.
Also there can sometimes be a problem with deterioration of older records.
I spent several weeks once puzzling over an entry in the 1790 PA census
which seemed to read - Philip Correll - as possibly my Philip Carroll. The
image on the microfilm had a small tear or wrinkle right through the
"Philip", which turned out to actually be Paul...
And then there are also the unproven assertions which folks have put into
the written records, either in books or other documents, which can now be
proven false, but cannot be changed in the books or microfilm.

It's not only spelling variants that need to be checked.

errors are also a problem. I have found my Carroll's as 'Canoll' and
'Canull'
because of sloppy handwriting that was misinterpreted.
