I started from scratch on a new GEDCOM for the Carrolls of Maryland, and
finally figured out the question I had below. What was the relationship
between Daniel Carroll who signed the Constitution and his wife Eleanor
Carroll?
They were 2nd cousins with ancestors-in-common Henry Darnall and Eleanor M.
Hatton;
and also 2nd cousins once-removed with ancestor-in-common Daniel O'Carroll
and wife, (of Litterluna, Kings County, Ireland).
Eric
Linda et al,
Wait! It gets even more tangled than that.
Daniel Carroll of the Constitution married Eleanor Carroll, daughter of
Daniel Carroll of Duddington and Ann Rozier, who was a son of Charles
Carroll the Immigrant and Mary Darnall. He, Daniel of the Constitution
therefore married a Grand-Daughter of Charles the Immigrant and Mary
Darnall. Carroll married Carroll.
Now this relatedness between Daniel Carroll and his wife Eleanor Carroll
defies the ability of my "relationship calculator" to figure out. It just
gives back "they were spouses". True, but there was a deeper family
relationship which I am at a loss to describe except as above. Perhaps
someone else can attempt it. Meanwhile I have gotten back that old
familiar
headache whenever I seriously try to untangle that Irish Carroll
family's
inter-relatedness.
Needless to say that Carroll family intermarried with the Darnalls in many
ways, and with each other as well. As Catholics the Carrolls were some
what
isolated socially from the rest of Protestant New England.
Furthermore
their land holdings were kept in the family by these marriages.
Unfortunately this may be an example of what can go wrong with marrying
into
your own family generation after generation. All those Carroll
babies
dead
at birth! It was a tragic family in the end.... these Planters of
Maryland.
Eric
