You are correct that most think CARROLL is traditionally an Irish name, but not all of
them come from Ireland. Many parts of the world had a name that sounds a little like
Carroll. You can see one list of surnames that have the C640 Soundex code and might have
become Carroll at

Also, there were Carl, Karl, Carel, and similar spellings among the Germans, Swiss, and
Palatines which came to the North American continent. Many of these changed to the
Carroll spelling.
I think there were Carrolls in England by 1850, so I would look backwards for a maternal
surname of Carroll.
