Hi,
In all of the records I have where my grandfather himself reported how to spell his name,
it was James "Carroll", with two L's. This includes the 1910 to 1930
censuses, and his 1905 marriage certificate.
But the earliest document I have for him is the 1900 census. His mother was still alive at
that time, and he was living with her. The census reports the family name as
"Carrol", with one L.
So at this point I don't know whether my grandfather decided that his surname should
have a double L, or whether the census-taker got it wrong that one time.
Has anybody else noticed a tendency for "Carrol" to be replaced by
"Carroll"?
Thanks.
