Dear Susan:
We have a number of Roberts as a first name in my family. Has any of
your male relatives submitted a Y-DNA test? If not, would you please
convince one to? It would be great if we all could tie up the loose
ends. Brick walls are hard to hurdle. Thanks.
Regards,
Mike
searching Carroll's in Liverpool, New York, and Massachussetts

Just a quick note to tell my 'Carroll' story -
A Civil War monument in Colrain, Massachusetts listed my gggrandfather
Robert Carroll and a Thomas Carroll - assumed to be his brother. I
could find info on Robert and ordered his pension file, but I could
never find a listing for Thomas in any book or website! Then another
researcher who saw my listing in this forum sent me info he had found
on Thomas - including pension records - because Thomas was enlisted as
Thomas Carle! When you think about thick accents, it makes perfect
sense that 'Carroll' would sound like 'Carle'. With this insight, I
looked again at census records and found the family in Sand Lake, New
York under 'Carle' - and there was Robert and Thomas and a sister
Hannah (for whom I had some notes but no connection), and a few other
brothers and sisters. And there was mother Elizabeth and father
Robert, too! Since then, I've also found them listed 'Carrol' - so
don't tie yourself to one spelling as I did for so long and lose
valuable hunting time.
Enjoy!
