Message Board Post:
On a trip to Williamsburg, VA several years ago I heard about one Daniel Carroll who
interpreted with the Native Americans for the colonists prior to the Revolution. I was
amazed that one had been here long enough to learn the Native American language.
Elizabeth Foster in her book "Virginia Carrolls and their Neighbors..." names
four Daniel Carrolls who came to the colonies before 1697. Two of them came as prisoners
and were indentured servants to a sponsor for a period of time and then were set free to
build a life for themselves and raise a family. Ms. Foster only names them; she
doesn't give a pedigree or give family details. However, that means there could have
been three or four generations of Carrolls in the colonies before the Revolution who might
use the name "Daniel" in the descendants.
Maybe some did become integrated into the Native America culture. Maybe that is why they
covered their trail so skillfully!
