Melanie,
I have long watched Owen and the John, Thomas, Sr., and Thomas, Jr. who were in Bladen
County, NC in the 1790 census. It seems there was no Thomas in 1800, but John remained
there for many years. If Thomas, Sr. had a grown son named Thomas, Jr., couldn't he
also have a son named Owen? Have you considered Thomas as the father of Owen?
There were 10 families of Carrolls not far across the county line in the adjoining Sampson
County in 1790. When Thomas, Sr. and Thomas, Jr. disappear from Bladen for the 1800
census, those same names appear in Sampson County. There was a note in the Sampson court
records stating that one Thomas was exempted from paying poll tax in 1787. That was
usually done when a man became disabled or when they were getting older (didn't have
to be extremely old). There were still two in the 1800 census, but only one in the 1810
census. One Thomas gave his SON James land in 1797 in Sampson. I believe this Thomas
must have died between 1800 and 1810. It is sometimes difficult to know which man is the
one being mentioned when there are two or three with the same name. I believe that the
Bladen County Carrolls were part of the extended family of the ones who settled in New
Hanover which became Duplin which became Sampson County.
By the way, Owen was missing from the Bladen census in 1820, but there was an Owen Carroll
there in the 1830 census who was 60-70 years of age.
I have been wondering if a man in your family with the surname of CARROLL has taken the
DNA test? If they have, would you write and tell me his kit number? I would like to
compare it to the men from Sampson County. I believe they are the same family.
