In 1880, there is a C.C. Carroll listed as follows:
1880 Census, TN, Hancock, 5th Civil District
Roll 1259, Book 1, Page 297a
Household 157/159
CARROLL, C.C., w, m, 21, married within the year, farmer, KY, VA, TN
Malinda, w, f, 22, wife, married within the year, keeping house, va, tn, tn
Ben and Elizabeth Carroll are at household 152/154 on this same page.
W. and Jane Carroll are on page 297b.
I believe that C.C. Carroll is Columbus Carroll, and that Melinda is his first wife (the
mother of John listed in 1900 census). We know that John was not the son of Nancy A.,
listed in 1900; because, she states that she has been married 15 years, with 4 living
children. John is 18 and the oldest of 5 children listed in the household, meaning he
probably had a different mother.
It is very possible that this Columbus Carroll is the Lum Carroll that we are looking for;
but, I would like to hear from someone in the Carroll family who may know any family
history regarding him and Getty Buttry. Her son, William Samuel Buttry was born in
Luther, TN. It could be that she originally named him Columbus Buttry, and then changed
his name. I had a similar thing happen to two children in my mother's family in
Frederick County, Maryland.
Regards,
Lillie
