Hi Carrolls,
My grandmother was Nancyann Narcisus Carrel, daughter of Andrew Jackson
Carrel and Mary Francis Parker. She was born in Clinton County, Missouri
on
September 21, 1874. Her grandfather was Robert Carroll/Carrel who was the
son of
John Carroll/Carrel and Elizabeth Stubblefield. John Carroll./Carrel is as
far
as I have been able to go back. He was born in North Carolina in 1790. He
migrated to Hawkins County, Tennessee before 1811 because he married in
July of
that year Elizabeth Stubblefield, daughter of Robert Loxley Stubblefield
and
Sarah Easley. John and Elizabeth and their sons Nathaniel, Robert and
William and his brother James and wife Polly Carroll left Tennessee abt
1820 for
Missouri where they settled in the part of Ray County which later became
Clay
County. John and Elizabeth moved to Dekalb County after 1850 because they
were
still living in Clay County when the 1850 Federal Census was taken. John
and
Elizabeth were in the 1860 Census of Dekalb County, Missouri. Elizabeth
died
after the census was taken. John later remarried. John and Elizabeth had
six
sons and three daughters. Their sons were Nathaniel, Robert, William,
Jackson, Francis Marion, and Major Carroll/Carrel. Their daughters were
Fanny,
Nancy and Martha.
I have been working with some of the descendants of John Carroll/Carrel
and
James Carroll/Carrel but so far we have hit a brick wall on trying to find
their parents. The Carroll name when John and James came to Clay County
was
spelled Carroll but Robert, Nathaniel and the other sons spelled it Carrel
in
later documents and that is the spelling their descendants are using now.
My grandmother said that our Carrols were Scotch-Irish. Other older
Carroll
relatives have told us that the Carrolls were originally MacCarrolls who
came
to America in 1750 from Ireland. Some of these older relatives believed
that
the father of James and John was a William Carroll. Both John and James
named a son William. When I was sent copies of some early research on the
Carrolls from a descendant of James Carroll, there was a pedigree chart
with a
William Carroll born 1770 as father of John and James. According to these
older
relatives who are all deceased, there was a letter that John and James
received
from Alfred Carroll from Tennessee in which he said that he was taking
care
of his aging parents. No one has been able to find this letter. I believe
that Alfred was a cousin of John and James. Following the idea that
William
might have been the father of John and James and brother of Luke Carroll
Jr, I
have found William and Luke Jr on the tax lists of Washington County, TN
and in Allison's Regiment in East Tenn.Militia in 1814. I am anxious to
contact any of Alfred Carroll's descendants to learn if they have any
information
on thej siblings of Luke Carroll Jr.
Susan,
I may have the answer to your question about where in VA the Carroll
family
came from. I have a copy of the survey for 400 acres for Luke Carroll in
Albemarle County, VA in 1749. Luke is not as common a name as John, James
and
William. The only other Luke Carroll I could find in VA land records was
Luke
Carroll from Grayson County, VA , the one who served in the Revolutionary
War.
There was a Luke Carroll Sr. and a Luke Carroll Jr. in Granville County,
North Carolina. When I was there last fall, I found Luke Sr. on tax lists
in the
1760s. In 1765 Luke Carroll and his wife Ann sold land in Granville. I
have
a copy of the land sale and the tax lists. I think this Luke could have
been
Luke Jr and the father of your Luke. From 1765 until 1778 there was no
record in North Carolina of a Luke Carroll. In 1778 a Luke Carroll was on
the tax
list in Rowan County, North Carolina. Iredell was formed from Rowan
County so
Luke may not have moved just the county lines moved. Since your Luke
Carroll
was born in Virginia, the Luke and Ann who sold land in Granville may
have
moved back to VA settling in Grayson County and then moving back to North
Carolina settling in Rowan County. These are just suppositions which have
yet to
be proven.
I'm going to VA in September and I will check out Grayson County and see
what I can find out.
