Fonda,
These 4 original Carroll brothers would all have been born in Ireland, most likely
Northern Ireland according to my aunt, historian Louise Carroll Wade who researched and
wrote a family history in the early 1960s. I should ask her permission to create a .pdf
version to put online for family researchers. None of our Carrolls are known to be
related to the famous Charles Carroll of Carrollton, signer of the Declaration of
Independence and a major landowner. Our 4 Carrolls lived in Dorchester County and were
farmers and became members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. They were not Roman
Catholic. I believe Charles Carroll of Carrollton was born in and lived in Baltimore MD,
a Roman Catholic. Find a biographical sketch of him at
http://charlescarrollhouse.org/the-carrolls/personal-biography-2 .
Carroll is a very common name, as we know (my biological ancestry is showing multiple
Carroll ancestry, most likely from my RC immigrant "Hassett" great-grandmother-
DNA shows me related to a Carroll in South Africa, and several in the US. She converted
when marrying a Methodist-Episcopal Matthew Moore). The name was earlier O'Carroll,
but these are anglicized Gaelic translations of the names, and may have come from various
Irish Gaelic spellings.
My cousins and I are plugging on Charles & Susannah. I'm glad to hear we know
where they are buried though. Regards.
