There are many O'Carroll names from Southern Ireland near Dublin. They
dropped the 'O' quite often when they left. That may be another avenue for
you to search. Many of them went first to Liverpool and from there to the
USA

I have long had 2 burning questions: Aunt Louise stated in her 1960s
genealogy that 4 Carroll brothers "appeared" in Dorchester Co, MD around the
time of the Revolutionary War- are we CERTAIN they were recent immigrants?
There were Carroll families already in this country living in Virginia prior
to this time. We need to seek immigration records. There is an email
discussion list called "The Ships List" which discusses and gives hints with
regarding to find passage records of individuals. Of course records are not
easy to find for the 1700s, but there is some chance.
My other question being IF the brothers were immigrants from N. Ireland, are
we certain the actual surname was Carroll or could it be a variant from an
Irish Gaelic name?
I believe DNA trails are worth investigating but I've made the suggestion
and it appears the Carroll males I know simply aren't interested. The cost
is far less than it was, beginning about $100. Additionally, some surname
projects give a discount or free testing for surname in their project. I
don't recomment 23&Me and
ancestry.com is not as compatible. Family Tree
DNA is presently the standard, I believe.
