Hi Carol,
I am searching for information on my great grandfather John Carroll married
to Ellen Agnes Hennessey.
Family lore has John being born in County or City Cork, Ireland, but I found
a Naturalization Paper in the Wisconsin Room at the University of Wisconsin
at Platteville in Grant County, Wisconsin:
Naturalization Paper Lafayette County, Wisconsin dated November 4, 1864:
I John Carroll do respectfully certify that I was born in the county
of Tipperary, Ireland and within and in allegiance to Queen Victoria and am
now 32 years of age: that I emigrated from Limerick in said Kingdom and
arrived at Springfield, Massachusetts in the United States of America in the
month of June A.D. 1846 (could be 1848, difficult to read); that I now
reside in the county
Lafayette, in the State of Wisconsin, and it is bona fide my intention to
become a citizen of the United States of North America, and to renounce all
allegiance to every foreign King, Prince, Potentate and State and especially
to Victoria Queen of Great Britian and Ireland. (signed with an X for John
Carroll) Attested by J. S. Murphy Clerk Circuit Court.
John and Ellen had 7 children, the first was Maria Theresa Carroll born Feb
11, 1859 in Cohoe Falls, Albany County, New York per her marriage record
located in Grant County, Wisconsin records. The second was John Martin
Carroll born July 1, 1861 in Cohoe Falls, Albany County, New York per his
marriage record located in Grant County, Wisconsin records. The third child
was Agnes Florence Carroll born April 27, 1863 in Platteville, Grant County,
Wisconsin per her death record located in Grant County, Wisconsin records.
The 1870 census has the family living in Darlington, Lafayette County,
Wisconsin.
The 1880 census has the family living in Lancaster, Grant County, Wisconsin.
On John and Ellen's divorce papers (they were divorced March 14, 1893 in
Lancaster, Grant County, Wisconsin) I received from the Wisconsin State
Historical Society, they were married by a father McGinty a priest of the
Roman Catholic Church in January 1859 in the state of New York.
I viewed all 220 pages of the 1860 census for Cohoe (there is no Cohoe
Falls), Albany County, New York and there is no John and Ellen Carroll or a
priest/clergyman McGinty listed.
John was born between 1827 and 1835 in Ireland(per various records) and died
January 15, 1909 in Lancaster, Grant County, Wisconsin per his death record
located in Grant County, Wisconsin records.
Ellen was born between 1830 and 1842 in Ireland (per various records) and
died October 18, 1909 in Lancaster, Grant County, Wisconsin per her death
record located in Grant County, Wisconsin records, her maiden name was
Hennessey.
Was hoping maybe one of your Patrick's sons was named John.
Lawrence Carroll

Just saw where you mentioned your Carrolls were from Co Tipperary. I
Am searching for the Patrick Carroll family near Clonmel. They were farmer
and had 11 children baptized in the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church
between 1815 and 1835. Five of the sons emigrated to the US in the mid
1800s, settling in Wisconsin. Could there be any connection? Carol
