My ancestor is a Phillip Carroll born 1812 in either Pennsylvania or Jefferson Co. Ohio.
His father was Phillip Carroll Sr. who died in 1813 as a prisoner of War. Following his
death most of his 9 children were divided up & taken in by other families. A written
history has surfaced stating Phillip Jr. was "adopted" by an Olinger family.
However, he didn't take the Olinger name until after he had married Mariah or Maria
Feltenberger in 1832 in Harrison Co. Ohio. It is most unusual. It's possible he
stayed with his mother Mary who seemed to have legal custody of her 3 youngest children
Henry, Jane, & Phillip. Adopted could mean given financial or emotional help, just
not enough known. Henry & Phillip moved to Henry Co. Indiana where they died, buried
next to each other. I don't know what happened to Jane. I'm also wondering if
there is any connection to other Carroll-Carrel families in the area.
