The 1850 census has the ages of each person. Can't you tell from that whether Jane is
the proper age to be mother to all the children, including Robert Davis?
Some things to think about... There was no race category for Native Americans, but I have
heard that if the census taker saw their darker color, he would record them as mulatto.
There were Native American mothers in many homes with English sounding surnames.
Also, I've been told that when the slave master fathered light colored children by a
slave, he occasionally reared them as his own. Maybe a document wasn't needed since
their father was a free man.
