I am stumped on my ancestor Robert Davis Carroll (who was white) who in 1850 was living in
York with Jane Carroll . There were several children, 2 of whom are listed as mulattoes.
Robert was killed during the Civil War. Was Jane his mother? Was she married or an unwed
mother? Who were the mulatto children? One was named Martha G. , she married mulatto
William Bryant. The other was Amanda Jane or Jane Amanda who married mulatto Henry Moss.
They were all in Spartanburg co in 1860 then buncombe co n.c. By 1870. Then I lose them
all. In 1870 Jane is living with one of the mulatto families. Wouldn't free mulattoes
have to be legally registered to avoid being enslaved? For them to be free in 1850 their
mother (Jane?) was probably white. Where would I look for registration records?
