Hi Jim,
It's been a long time since we last talked about our Dempsey's. I'm glad you
now have a Carroll in the Y-DNA project, but if the lineages are intact, then the 9/12
mismatch is not a close match. However, one can't base much on 12 alleles.
Just for clarification, the Hardy who was hanged is not my direct lineage, but MAY be
related.
I've been almost totally out of genealogy for a long while. A Great-grandmother has
health issues and a need to be with close family and friends. I know nothing at all about
the Family Finder Test, but my daughter has just received a kit and we will be learning a
little about it soon.
I don't understand how the atDNA test shows relatedness, but I can tell you that ONE
Dempsey, Jr. left Sampson County, NC, paused in SC for a while, and then was in AL. I
have reason to believe that he was my GGG-Granduncle.
I don't know the John you mention, but these Sampson/Duplin families had lots of
children. Many of them went missing from the area between 1800 and 1820. I know one John
W. Carroll who moved from the northern part of Sampson County, NC to Gibson County, TN in
1848, but our DNA doesn't match that family.
I can put you in touch with descendants of both Dempsey, Jr. and John W. if you think they
may be your men.
Keep researching and sharing your information. The CARROLL DNA Project seems to be
lacking in the active leadership we had at first. I don't know why.
