Kim,
The surname projects test only that DNA passed from father to son.... Y-DNA. Your given
name could be male or female, so I don't know if you could you be tested in either
project or would need to get a male relative to be tested. Any MALE, with the surname
which you want to test who believes the surname has been passed only by male family
members, can send in a test kit to Family Tree DNA whether they join through a Project or
not. However, it is cheaper to join through a project. You are then given a kit number
which becomes the way your results are posted publicly, but your name is never posted
publicly. The results are mailed to you, and the results are posted in the results of the
project you have joined. You can then request that the results be displayed with the
results of another project if you wish. Some projects have criteria for joining, others
accept anyone. So you see, you can join through any project, but since your surname is
Carroll, that might be the p!
lace to begin.
The validity of any DNA test relies on accurate records regarding adoptions, illegitimate
children, and name changes. Since the Carroll-Maccubbin is a known name change (according
to some who are doing research on that family), there are probably court records for that
adoption/name change.
Peter is the one who can help you find the best solution for a test. I have gotten behind
recently.
