DOCKERY GETS 10 to 15 YEARS ON MANSLAUGHTER A verdict of guilty of manslaughter was
returned into Superior Court last Saturday night at 9:30 o'clock Central Standard Time
by the jury in the case the State vs. James Dockery, 18 in the case of second degree
murder of Carl Carroll. Judge Clemant later sentenced Dockery to no less than 10 years and
no more than 15 years in hard labor. The case was called to trail at 2:30 o'clock
Saturday afternoon. The defendant had no attorney and the case was not argued. A number of
witnesses were examined. The jury was given the case about 5:15 o'clock. Dockery, it
was testified, shot Carroll about 8:30 Saturday night, April 1st in a fight following a
box supper at Ebenezer, five miles west of Murphy. Two shots were fired, one entering the
left ear and coming out the neck, the other entering Carroll's side near the heart and
passing through the body. Witnesses testified that Carroll was drinking and using bad
language and that he had advanced!
on Dockery with something in his hand which looked like a knife and then Dockery shot
him. Carroll was a mechanic and worked for the Dickey Chevrolet Company here. Having been
employed there for the past nine years.
