Was John J. a sailor or ship captain? You could find his name on a Loyds
Of London insurance record. If John J. was born in Ireland you could look
for him on passenger ship records from Ireland to St. John's. Or perhaps
his paternal ancestor was part of the English Army and settled in
Newfoundland after the American Revolution, which would support John J.
being born in Newfoundland. Regarding Mary Gearin, perhaps you could look
at passenger list records in the mid 1840's to Montreal from Cork on the so
called "coffin ships" during the potato famine. Lastly, if your surname is
Carroll, perhaps you can join the Y-DNA Surname Project and connect to
others through your DNA. Best of luck.

I'm trying to find more information on my Carroll side. My great
grandfather was James E Carroll, born in Cambridge Massachusetts in 1894.
His parents were Patrick J. Carroll and Mary Murphy. Patrick was born in
St. Johns, Newfoundland, in 1863. His father was John J. Carroll born April
10, 1836, in St. Johns, Newfoundland. His wife was Mary Gearin ( However,
on various records, it could be Seran, Guerin, or Geran.. not quite
sure.)She was born in Canada. On the 1900 census in Cambridge MA it says
John's parents were born in Ireland, but now I'm stuck. I can't find any
birth records of anyone in Newfoundland geneaology websites ( the dates
ranges are not within the times I need.)I also can't find John J's death
date. I was wondering if any of you could help.
Some of John J Carroll's children are:
Patrick J Carroll B- 1863 Nwfld D- 1905 MA
Mary J Carroll ( Cunningham) B- 1878 Nwfld
John T. Carroll B- 1866 Nwfld
James T. Carroll B- 1866 Nwfld
Richard Carroll B- 1875 Nwfld
Thanks so much.
