Thanks for your note.
Yes, my GGGaunt was Elizabeth Shipes Carroll. I have documented the family connections of
that generation extensively and they are all found somewhere in the 1850- 1860 census. The
Shipes/Carrolls lived in close proximity.
What you will NOT find in the 1850 Barnwell county census is the name of Elizabeth's
brother, Darling's, wife- for that you have to go to Jacob Shipes will. In that
document Jacob names Ann Carroll as Darling's "reputed wife". She is not
listed in the 1850 Census and the Ann Shipes that is listed is probably a niece or cousin
of Jacob Shipes (much too young to be "my" Ann.) Ann "Shipps" and
Darling's family (but not Darling-his date and place of death are not known) are found
in the 1860 census in Augusta. Ann is buried in Magnolia Cemetary in Augusta(d.12/30/1888.
Her family (and their descendents) lived in Augusta until 1961. I am the last of that
line.
I would like to know the names of Benjamin Carrolls sisters and neices. I think
"my" Ann Carrol was one of them but have never been able to document her
family.
The Shipes / Carrol /Hair relationship continues until about 1900. I can provide
exhausting details.
The Hairs and Wooleys are also in the family tree between 1796-1830. Families of the same
social status invariably intermarried.
The Hair connection started early in the Shipes family. David Shipes(Jacob's Father
and Revolutionary Veteran d.1823)second wife was a Hair. They had numerous children. Her
first name has been lost to history.
Joe
